Arts & Culture
It is fairly well known that the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee have been graced by artists and writers for over 100 years, and, through the many gem-like facets of its community, Culver continues to be rich in artistic expression: literary, theatrical, musical, and visual.
One can often find book-signings at the Culver Union Township Library or the Culver Coffee Company. There are summer theater productions offered by both the community-based Maxinkuckee Players and the Culver Academies Summer Schools and Camps. Music fills the air through special performances arranged by the Antiquarian Society in summer and the Culver Academies Fine Arts Program as well as the annual performances by the Maxinkuckee Singers in winter. For the best in High School Theater, five productions are offered each school year, two at Culver Community Schools and three at the Culver Academies. And don’t miss the special performances by visiting artists to the Academies’ Huffington Concert Series and the Eppley Auditorium events!
The visual arts are no less represented with ongoing exhibitions at Culver Union Township Library and the Culver Academies’ Crisp Visual Arts Center, home of the Culver Art Collection. For those who would like to purchase fine art, there are rotating exhibitions at the Culver Coffee Company and The Unintended Curator. All in all, the arts are alive and well in Culver and always worth a visit or an extended stay.

Culver Paint Out
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works. The first Culver Paint Out event occurred in September 2022 and was a huge success! Over 30 artists from around the country captured the beauty of Culver on canvas. Join us and these artists at this newly adopted bi-annual event in September 2024. For more information, please visit findculver.com/culverpaintout
PUBLIC ART
Culver is home to two murals located on Lakeshore Dr. The first one can be found on the West Pavilion in the Culver Park. The mural highlights beautiful Lake Maxinkuckee and its history of the steamboats that used to travel passengers across the lake in the early 1900’s. The other mural is close by on the east wall of the Culver Fire Department building, displaying a historical scene of firefighters in Culver! Both murals were designed and created by The Bridge Collective.
